The Supreme Court reversed course and will now allow Texas to arrest migrants who are crossing from Mexico. Earlier this week the court ruled that Texas could not implement this law but now the court says that it can.
This is not the end of this case. It is simply the court allowing the law to go into effect while the case is litigated. The case revolves around Texas Senate Bill 4, which makes it a crime to cross the border outside of ports of entry, punishable by up to 6 months in prison for first-time offenders and 20 years in prison for repeat offenders. The Biden administration is suing Texas to stop it.
More than 9 million illegal immigrants have crossed into the U.S. from Mexico since October of 2021, according to Customs and Border Protection data.
