The President and Finance Minister of Iran were killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday and many are worried that this is another Archduke Ferdinand moment that will launch the world into a global war.
President Ebrahim Raisi, 63, was traveling with Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and seven others when the helicopter went down in northern Iran. There are no reported survivors. President Raisi was rumored to be the successor to Iranian’s Ayatollah Khomeini who is 86 years old.
Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber will take over for as President until an election can be held in the coming weeks.
This tragedy comes after Iran’s embassy was attacked in Syria just weeks ago. President Raisi ordered the retaliatory strikes on Israel. The fear is that Iran will perceive a direct attack or worse, that it was a direct attack. No rational actor would want to go to war with Iran.
