Marijuana is moving off the list of dangerous drugs to a list of “less dangerous drugs,” according to the Associated Press.
If this is true, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration would recognize marijuana and cannabis as a Schedule III drug. It is currently a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and LSD. Moving it down the list would mean that it is no longer forbidden.
Marijuana is allowed for medical use in most states and allowed for recreational use in 24 states and two territories. This new federal classification would change the laws and potentially the prison sentencing of people arrested for possession and use.
If marijuana is re-classified as a Schedule III drug, it would still be regulated like other Schedule III drugs including ketamine, Tylenol with codeine, and anabolic steroids.
