President Trump has suddenly changed his tune on the war in Ukraine and the new narrative makes no sense.
After meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky at the United Nations, Trump said that Ukraine can not only win the war but reclaim all of its lost territory. That is fantasy. The reality is that Russia controls more land than ever in eastern Ukraine and it is not about to hand it back.
But maybe Trump is playing games. He insists Ukraine can win with the financial support of Europe and NATO, pointedly not mentioning the United States. He knows Europe cannot afford to bankroll this war. They have tanked their economy trying. Is this his way of patting them on the head and sending them off with a hopeless assignment?
Zelensky thanked Trump on X, as he does with every photo op, and even echoed Trump’s speech when he asserted that the UN’s influence is fading and its decisions on major issues often meaningless. There is no risk in saying that if you are trying to impress Trump and Trump said it first.
He then rattled off the list of countries he hopes will keep cutting checks and sending weapons: the United Kingdom, France, and the usual coalition of the willing. In other words, the high school seniors he hopes will stand by his junior varsity administration.
