House Speaker Mike Johnson says that he will vote to fund the government when the U.S. hits the debt ceiling (yes again) only if the bill includes a provision that requires states to obtain proof of citizenship for voter registration.
That’s nice but he caved on the last spending bill when Republicans wanted border security and an end to funding the war in Ukraine so let’s see how he plays this one. Even if he were to draw the line, the Democratic Senate would never go for it.
If no deal is reached, the debt ceiling will trigger on September 30. There will inevitably be another late-night standoff over this just weeks before the election. Hold on.
