Lingering Questions in Baltimore

Details continue to unfold about the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The Coast Guard said that it will suspend its search and rescue for the six people that they could not find.

On Tuesday, President Biden said that “Everything so far indicates that this was a terrible accident.  At this time, we have no other indication — no other reason to believe there was any intentional act here.”

That’s a fast and loose conclusion, don’t you think? Shouldn’t we wait on that due to the many unanswered questions, as we discussed on Tuesday’s episode of Redacted? This is not “just one of those things.”

In addition to the ecological mess and lives lost, this will be a major blow to the economy. Shipping out of this busy port will slow to a halt, local businesses will be hurt by losing an important commuter route, and important goods such as sugar and coal will be impacted. And how long until the city can rebuild this bridge? TBD. Maryland Governor Wes Moore says that this will be a “long term build.”
