Rwanda began vaccinating its people for Marburg virus this weekend. Marburg is much like the Ebola virus. It causes a viral hemorrhagic fever, which can lead to bleeding from the nose and mouth. Symptoms can include lethargy, dehydration, nausea, vomiting, sore throat and abdominal pain.
The WHO began warning about Marburg last year but a vaccine had not yet been tested on humans as of February of 2023. Now they say that it has not been tested on children so the vaccine rollout in Rwanda is for adults 18 years and older.
In Rwanda, Marburg has reportedly caused 12 deaths and 46 confirmed cases.
