The Lead: Biden Live From The City of Brotherly Love Philadelphia

credit: ap

U.S. President Joe Biden spoke in a rare prime-time speech in Philadelphia on Thursday to address the “soul of the nation.” It was, well, on the divisive side.

The President took the opportunity to hit hard at Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans. He says they are “extremists” who “threaten the very foundations of our Republic.”

Why? Because they refuse to accept the outcome of the election and threaten violence if they do not win elections, according to the President. Which begs the question: if people choose to believe in any part of Republican Party values, what measures will be taken against them if we can label them “extremists”? That is a big word that the U.S. government has used to pursue many an enemy in the past. Is it dangerous to use it against political opponents, or are we all good with this?

During his speech, protesters with bullhorns could clearly be heard and the President said that those people have never had to suffer from “good manners.”

The Republican National Committee released a statement in response to the President’s speech saying that he was the “divider-in-chief.”

Well, he sure wasn’t reaching across the aisle with this one.

Chinese Genocide or Western Propaganda?

credit: coda story

The United Nations released a report accusing China of human rights abuse of the Uyghur population. China refutes this report and says that it is evidence of the U.N.’s collaboration with the West.

It is an interesting read. The report does not echo the Western media’s accusation of genocide, forced imprisonment and forced labor. In fact, the U.N. never observed any of those things. They wrote the report based on publicly-available documents, interviews and an in-person visit from High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet. None of the report is based on her trip though.

A lot of the human rights violations, it says, happens at VETC camps, or Vocational Educational Training Camps, which China used to combat its terrorism problem, which the U.N. admits it had. But the U.N. neither saw these camps nor could they assess whether or not they are still in use. China told the U.N. that they’re not and the U.N. did not see any. So….???

We break down the other confusing parts of this report in this video on Redacted. We are not saying that there has not been any racism or human rights abuse in China. We have not been there and we don’t know. But clearly, neither does the U.N.

About Those Masks We've Been Wearing

giphy.gifcredit: getty

new study shows that Covid masks contain titanium dioxide (TiO2), a chemical you do not want to be breathing in.

TiO2 is a suspected carcinogen for humans. A study published in “Scientific Reports” says that it is present in 70% of the face masks that are found for sale for consumers to use for Covid masks. What’s worse, this is unregulated!

This study did not address whether or not humans were breathing them in. It only observed these particles present in most consumer-use masks. Researchers warned of “the possible future consequences caused by a poorly regulated use of nanotechnology in textiles…. In animal experiments, toxic effects were reported when TiO2particles were inhaled.”

Great. I mean, we’ve only been wearing them for over two years now…

Are Screens Are Making Us Older?

giphy.gifcredit: giphy

The blue light from your screens may be aging you, according to a new study. Excuse me while I make a body-sized blue light reflector suit…

Scientists found that exposure to blue light alters metabolites, which are chemicals that are essential for cell function. As a result, researchers say that blue light may have a detrimental effect on “a wide range of cells in our body, from skin and fat cells to sensory neurons.” All of these things, of course, can accelerate aging and “lead to premature death.”

They drew these conclusions by exposing fruit flies to blue light, after which they found that the flies’ brains had increased levels of metabolite and succinate and decreased levels of glutamate. Low levels of glutamate can decrease brain function. In addition, they found that fruit flies without blue light exposure live longer than those with blue light exposure. Yet another reason to limit your screen time. After you finish reading this newsletter of course!

What's Trending?

This TikTok video is trending because a pilot had to tell passengers to stop using AirDrop to send around nude photos or else he’ll turn this plane around. Can’t stop laughing about this. Lesson: Don’t be a freak.

This post is trending because it’s heartwarming.

Kanye is trending because the musician is airing his dirty laundry online, so to speak.

V for Vendetta is trending because the backdrop of President Biden’s speech is reminiscent of that movie
