Happy Tuesday.

The Lead: A New Covid Variant

credit: fda

There is a new Covid variant and it is said to be resistant to immunity and more contagious and resistant to the Covid treatments that physicians are currently using. So what do we need to know?

The variant called XBB is a variant of Omicron, or the BA.1.1 variant. There is also BQ1.1. One is spreading through Asia and the other through Europe and the U.S. and it is said to be spreading at twice the rate of previous variants.

We are being warned about this at a time when the media also warns that vaccine adoption is “sluggish.” So vaccination has slowed and now we have a scary new variant that they say is resistant to treatment and previous vaccinations? Is that true or is that to get us to roll up our sleeves? I don’t ask that to be an instigator. I ask because transparency about vaccine trials has been sorely lacking and the current booster on the market has not been through any human trials. It is the 8-mouse special.

The vaccine being offered now is for BA5 and BA5. The media says that the current booster “should” also protect against BA1.1 but they haven't said how they know that.

The Biden administration extended the state of emergency over Covid last week but judge for yourself according to current CDC data. Is this an emergency?

No Parler Tricks

If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em. That's what Kanye West seems to be doing by buying the social network Parler.

West was punished last week on Twitter and Instagram for a Tweet referring to Jewish people. So now he will put his eggs in another basket where he can, presumably, say what he wants.

"In a world where conservative opinions are considered to be controversial we have to make sure we have the right to freely express ourselves," Mr. West said in the press release

The deal is expected to close by the end of the year but no dollar amount was disclosed. West's Parler profile can be found here.

Woke World War 3

credit: bloomberg

Woke War III is trending because of this Newsweek article, which was endorsed on Twitter by Elon Musk. It may be an unfortunate moniker but it is an important concept: The far right and the far left have joined together to champion war.

Of course, labeling something the third war, suggests that the first two were also wars of wokeness or rhetoric. Let's put that semantic argument aside and take writer David Sacks' point at face value.

Sacks points out that Obama came to power with a stance against the Iraq war and that neoconservatives championed withdrawing from Afghanistan to save lives. But now…

"Fast forward to today and anyone who suggests that NATO expansion could have been a contributing factor to the current Ukraine crisis, or that the sanctions imposed on Russia are not working and have backfired on a soon-to-be-shivering Europe, or even that the U.S. must prioritize avoiding a world war with a nuclear-armed Russia, is denounced as a Putin stooge… It's nonsensical, and a real debate would expose some of the delusions in this thinking. But we aren't allowed to have one."

This was made apparent when the mob jumped on Musk for proposing peace agreements with Russia. To Twist an old Dr. Phil'ism: Would you rather be right, or would you rather be at war?

News By The Numbers

150. That is how many lit candles a man in Idaho held in his mouth for 30 seconds to break a Guinness World Record. The previous record was 105 candles.

218. That is how many prisoners were exchanged between Russia and Ukraine on Monday. There were 110 Russians released from Ukraine and 108 Ukrainians released to Russia. There were supposed to be 110 but two wanted to stay in Russia.

100. That is how old this World War II veteran turned in September and he celebrated his birthday with four horses from his former unit, the 1st Cavalry. Worth noting these are not actual horses he served with. Horses live an average of 25-30 years. That one threw me.

25,000. That is how many animals have to be moved to new homes because a zoo in the U.K. is closing. I would love to take a tortoise home but am worried it would outlive me. They live an average of 80-150 years.

Grading Girls Higher

giphy.gifcredit: brittanica

Teachers give girls higher grades than boys, according to a new study in the British Journal of Sociology and Education.

Researchers analyzed exam results for 10th-grade students. They found that when results were graded anonymously, girls scored higher in language and boys scored higher in math. When teachers graded the test non-anonymously, they graded girls ahead in both subjects.

Why is this? Researchers say that there might be a bias against boys because they are less likely to be quiet and organized in class. As jokey as that might sound, it’s worth considering. Discouragement in boys can have a snowball effect. An excellent book on this topic is the 2000 book called Raising Cain. IMHO, a must-read for boy parents!

What's Trending?

James Biden is trending. He is the brother of President Biden. The Washington Examiner published information accusing the FBI of having "voluminous evidence" of crimes by the President's brother and son.

Clayface is trending on the news that he may be the next Batman villain in an upcoming Batman movie.

James Corden is trending because a New York City restaurateur has banned the comedian from his restaurant and offers this explanation. Update: Corden reportedly apologized to the man and has been given another chance to dine at the restaurant. Glad we worked that out.
