🚨 Cheerio! – March 11 2024

Happy Monday.

Airlines are getting stricter about carry on luggage but Southwest Airlines says that neck pillows and food in disposable bags that you bring to eat on the flight don’t count. What if you pack personal items IN your neck pillow? Does that count?

Lead: Death and Destruction in Rafah

President Joe Biden said that if Israel attacks Rafah, where Palestinian civilians have gathered to escape the bombs of the Israeli army, that would be a red line. Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu says that Israel will blow right past that red line and further will accept no red lines, full stop.

“We’ll go there. We’re not going to leave. You know, I have a red line. You know what the red line is, that October 7 doesn’t happen again. Never happens again,” Netanyahu said to Politico

President Biden said that Israel must protect Palestinian civilians in his State of the Union speech last week but Israel dismisses that need. President Netanyahu says that people are not starving to death in Gaza.

“We don’t have that kind of information. That’s not the information we have. And we monitor it closely,” he said.

Israel has barred journalists from entering Gaza to cover these attacks.

So what will the U.S. do now? Still, send weapons even as Israel flippantly crosses the red line?

Ukraine Is Mad At The Pope

Ukraine is upset at the Pope for offering to broker peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Why is that offensive? Because Ukraine does not want peace at any cost and found the Pope’s suggestion for a white flag an affront to their bloodlust.

“Our flag is a yellow and blue one. This is the flag by which we live, die, and prevail. We shall never raise any other flags,” said Ukraine’s top diplomat, Dmytro Kuleba.

“Die” is the operative word. Ukraine’s military is needlessly dying in a failed pursuit of land that asked Russia to protect and annex them.

The Pope said that Ukraine should have the “courage of the white flag.” He explained, “When you see that you are defeated, that things are not going well, it is necessary to have the courage to negotiate.” Obviously, the Pope sees what Ukraine refuses to see, namely that “things are not going well.”

The Kremlin responded to the Pope’s comments saying that they too have been ready to discuss peace all along.

Cheerio! Not So Much

The U.K. is the second-most miserable country in the world, according to a new report. Other English-speaking countries didn’t do much better.

In fact, out of 71 countries surveyed, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa were all in the bottom quartile of mental wellbeing. The United States scored okay, ranked 29th out of 71.

Uzbekistan scored the lowest on the list but they were added for the first time this year. Could it be that researchers had to find some other miserable place so that the U.K. would not be dead last? The U.K. even scores lower than Ukraine and Syria, two places ravaged by war! Bloody hell!

What's Trending?

This photograph of the Princess of Wales is trending because people say it must be AI. The sleeve of Princess Catherine doesn’t add line up and the hand of Prince Louis looks strange. The Associated Press and three other news agencies issued a "kill notification” for the photo, meaning they're asking for it not to be used.

JK Rowling is trending for this sarcastic X post about "inclusive language" for Mother’s Day in the UK.

Russell Wilson is trending because the quarterback has signed on to join the Pittsburgh Steelers after being cut from the Denver Broncos.

Oprah Pushing Big Pharma

Why is ABC giving Oprah Winfrey the chance to do an hour-long commercial for big pharma? That is exactly what she plans to do later this month.

The ABC special will be called “An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution.” It will feature medial experts to discuss weight loss drugs such as Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy. Will they also have experts on to warn of the dangers of those drugs and discuss the mountain of litigation the drugmakers are facing? Will they discuss the fact that they have been linked to cancer in rats and are being offered to children as young as 12? Will they discuss that Oprah has a financial stake in Weight Watchers, which now prescribes these drugs, meaning she has a financial interest in their promotion?

I’m guessing the answer to those questions is “no” but we’ll watch and see.
