Happy Wednesday

With a war underway and airports in disarray, President Trump made time for a lighthearted sightseeing stop at Elvis Presley’s Graceland this week. He marveled over Elvis and contemplated (for some reason) if he could have beaten him in a fight. Meanwhile, back in the real world, bombings continue abroad, and travelers remain stuck in hours-long lines during the TSA crisis.

Lead: Victory Declared—Reality Pending

We won! This is what President Trump has declared about the war with Iran, also stating that Iran would like to make a deal with the U.S., and that they have agreed not to have a nuclear weapon.

Wow, this war is really wrapping up nicely for the U.S. Or is it? Think about it, why would Iran be open to peace talks and agree to these terms after repeatedly being struck by the U.S. and Israel four times over the past two years? This fourth hit is the reason they refer to the current war as Operation True Promise 4 rather than Operation Epic Fury.

Even as Iran takes a hit for the fourth time, it still puts its best foot forward by sending the U.S. a present—a very big present—or at least that’s what Trump is saying, in what some are describing as a “bizarre” press conference.

So, as Trump maintains that peace talks are underway, Iran rejects the claim. There’s also been mention of Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner attempting to personally negotiate with Iran, but sources are saying that Iran will not negotiate with them, stating that they are “foreign agents serving Israel.” Will they engage in talks with J.D. Vance, or are all cards off the table?

Many are accusing Trump of timing his victory statements to manipulate the oil market, or to buy more time for troops to arrive in the Middle East. This seems like a more plausible explanation.

Speaking of deploying troops, according to two U.S. officials, the Pentagon has plans to send 3,000 soldiers to Iran from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. We were told the war is over and victory is secured, so clearly those thousands of troops are just heading out there to assist with the afterparty celebrations.

Newsom Flip Flops on Israel

After saying that Israel was an apartheid state in an interview earlier this month, California Gov. Gavin Newsom is now backtracking, saying that he regrets using that word.

But why the narrative reset when Israel is decidedly an apartheid state? Palestinians can’t use certain roads in their own towns. They can be detained without trial under the concept of administrative detention, whereas Israelis have a right to a fair trial. There is no other word for it.

Why would he walk back his statement? Could it be because more Americans expressed sympathies with Palestinians versus Israelis in a new Gallup poll? The number of Democrats who support Israel is especially low but this is the first time in recorded history that American sympathies for Palestinians outranked support for Israelis.

This could also be why Democratic candidates are rejecting AIPAC. It is not on principle. It is on optics. Newsom said he has never taken donations from the group and “never will.” Others are following suit; for instance, Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) declared last week that he “wouldn’t take AIPAC money” anymore.

It seems Newsom was testing the waters with that apartheid comment, but he swam too far from the shore so now he’s flip-flopping. That’s who he is. Spineless.
