The Lead: Netanyahu and Biden Need Marriage Counseling
The U.S. canceled a meeting with Israeli officials after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that President Biden has been withholding the weapons that Israel needs to carry out its war in Gaza. The comment reportedly “enraged” top aides in the White House.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that weapons have not been held up and that the White House is confused by this. “We genuinely do not know what he is talking about,” she said.
Meanwhile, Israeli officials are showing division over Netanyahu’s goal of eliminating Hamas. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, a military spokesperson, said this week that this an unachievable goal.
“This business of destroying Hamas, making Hamas disappear – it’s simply throwing sand in the eyes of the public,” he said. “Hamas is an idea, Hamas is a party. It’s rooted in the hearts of the people – whoever thinks we can eliminate Hamas is wrong.”
According to Antiwar.com, “Netanyahu’s office responded to Hagari’s remarks by saying the prime minister’s ends in Gaza remain unchanged. Netanyahu ‘has defined the destruction of Hamas’ military and governing capabilities as one of the goals of the war. The Israeli military, of course, is committed to this.’the statement said.”
Ukraine has banned another opposition party, the Nash Krai (Our Land) political party. This is the second party to be banned since the war with Russia began in 2022.
A court ordered the party to ban the party and seize all property, funds and assets of the party and hand them over to the state. What did they do to deserve this? Unclear. The party portends to be a defender of local interests and communities and opposes a government that puts its own interest ahead of the interest of communities.
The New York Times just woke up to the fact that Ukraine is also antagonistic to the media. The paper reports that Ukraine has subjected journalists to “increasing restrictions and pressure from the government of President Volodymyr Zelensky.” One journalist who was critical of the government received a draft notice the next day. Others are being spied on by the Ukrainian spy agency, the SBU.
This is well known, but politicians pretend not to know it when discussing the defense of Ukraine. The U.S. State Department’s recent report on Ukraine notes all of this.

Stanford has become the third U.S. university to commit to free speech and “institutional neutrality.” Harvard University and Syracuse University did the same just a few weeks ago.
What does this mean? It means that universities will “no longer issue institutional statements on controversial issues.” Doing this has led to speech and academic suppression that is clearly harmful for academic progress and open discussion.
Stanford’s new Statement on Freedom of Expression proclaims that the “freedom to explore and present new, unconventional, and even unpopular ideas is essential to the academic mission of the university.”
Stanford also adopted a new “Policy on Institutional Statements.” It says that “Stanford University leaders and administrators should not express an opinion on political and social controversies unless these matters directly affect the mission of the university or implicate its legal obligations.”
Kevin Costner is trending because he says he is not dating the singer Jewel, despite rumors and photos showing the two are chummy.

Adam Lambert is trending because people really liked his ITV documentary called “Adam Lambert: Out, Loud and Proud.”
Ash Barty is trending because she will return to play at Wimbledon at an exhibition doubles match. She has not played at the tournament since her 2021 singles win.
News By The Numbers
Two. That is how many idiots were arrested for vandalizing Stonehenge, the prehistoric megalithic structures. The group responsible says that they did this just before the summer solstice, when thousands of people are expected to visit the site as an environmental protest. They said that the orange paint that they used was cornstarch that would wash off but Stonehenge is a legally protected monument and a world heritage site so their actions are illegal. And dumb.
$0. That is how much JetBlue will now charge for carry on bags for all customers, no matter that ticket they purchase. The airline used to upcharge for carry ons but they will ditch that policy starting in September and people are shocked at what the NYPost calls a “rare policy update in favor of the customer” in the year 2024.
Louisiana is facing a lawsuit over a new law that requires schools to display the Ten Commandments from the Bible in every classroom. The suit comes from the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana, Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Freedom from Religion Foundation.
Republican Gov. Jeff Landry signed the law on Wednesday. It specifies the exact version of the Ten Commandments and requires them to be displayed in school classrooms in any school that is state-funded, including colleges and universities.
The ACLU says this “violates the separation of church and state and is blatantly unconstitutional.” Proponents of the law say that it doesn’t because the commandments do not promote any one religion. I wonder if that will be hard to defend in court given the first four commandments are all about respecting one particular god, namely the Christian one.
It will be interesting to watch this litigation play out in the year 2024.
