Happy Wednesday.

Lead: Trading Jabs Over “Garbage”

credit: whitehouse

The news cycle this week is so damn petty. It’s about garbage. Literal garbage.

Democrats and Republicans are trading outrage over who called who garbage.

At a Trump rally in New York City, a comedian made a joke about Puerto Rico as a floating island of garbage, which Democrats used to bait Latinos for votes. It was absolute catnip for AOC.

On Tuesday night, President Biden said that the only garbage he sees are Trump supporters. Or supporter’s. The White House transcript is using punctuation to explain this away. They say that the referred-to garbage was the one Trump supporter, the comedian who made the trash joke. The President’s X account clarified it thus immediately after. You listen in and decide for yourself.

Gosh this is stupid. Neither of the actual candidates said garbage therefore neither of them should be blamed for it.

Republicans are taking to this trash talk like they took to the “basket of deplorable” badge from Hillary Clinton. They are using it to bait voters and say that Democrats malign Republicans.

Sadly, the remark took the air out of a major rally for Kamala Harris in Washington D.C., the same way the Puerto Rico joke took the air out of the Trump rally in New York City. In the days running up to the election, trading outrage is very distracting from actual issues but alas, that’s where we are.

Economic Growth or Economic Decline?

credit: giphy

The U.S. Gross Domestic Product rose by 2.8% in the third quarter of this year, according to the Commerce Department. That is slightly encouraging, although below the 3.1% growth rate that “economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected. It also marked a slight pullback from a 3% rate in the second quarter.”

But is this due to a strong economy or is the government pumping that number with hormones due to increased spending? Federal government expenditures soared by 9.7% in the same quarter, meaning that government spending added 0.9% to that 2.8% growth rate.

According to economist Brian Wesbury, that means that “real private GDP [is] less than 2%.”

Terrorism You Say?

credit: telegraph

Remember when the U.K. government arrested people for what they called “far right” protests after the killing of three young girls in Southport?

After three young girls were murdered by a teenage boy at their Taylor Swift dance class, scared and frustrated British people took to the streets to protest open borders and liberal politicians who refuse to keep them safe. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called these people racists and extremists. He said that the problem was a “rot” in the heart of the British people. People were arrested for their social media posts. The government said that this anti-immigration reaction was unreasonable and illegal!

Only they may have had a point. According to the charges, Axel Rudakubana, did have links to Al Qaeda training manuals and is being charged with terrorism. So the government owes these people an explanation. They were protesting an immigration policy that they think has made them unsafe and the government prosecuted them for doing so, only to turn around and validate that the terrorism fears are valid.

MP Robert Jenrick says that this has been a disservice to the British people and the Prime Minister owes them an explanation.

What’s Trending?

Channing Tatum is trending because he’s single again ladies! He has reportedly split from his girlfriend of three years, Zoë Kravitz.

News By The Numbers

Two. That is how many Yankees fans were ejected from the World Series on Tuesday night because they tried to pry a ball out of the right fielder’s glove. I want to give these two the benefit of the doubt but the video is egregious. The player clearly has the ball in his glove. The umpire ruled it an out anyway.

517. That is how many members of the Tren de Aragua gang have been arrested in New York City this year alone, according to the New York Post.

250,000. That is how many subscribers canceled their subscription to The Washington Post after the paper refused to endorse a presidential candidate. That is approximately 10% of their subscription base.

Suicide Pod Fails

credit: getty

How is this for a Halloween nightmare? The first person to use the suicide pod in Switzerland was not gently lulled to sleep in death. She was found to have been strangled while still alive in a death trap.

The CEO of the company is in custody due to the botched death.

The woman was a 64-year-old American mother of two. She signed up to die peacefully in a suicide pod in the middle of a forest near a cabin in Merishausen, Switzerland but that’s not what happened.

After pushing the button to start the death process, the door to the pod reportedly opened and shut a few times. Six and a half minutes later, the CEO was heard on a video call saying “She’s still alive, Philip.” He now says that he was confused by the alarm from a heart rate monitor.

She did finally die but a forensic doctor present at the scene says that she had “among other things, severe injuries to her neck.” That’s not supposed to have happened.

According to reports, “After being notified of her death by the two lawyers involved in the project and present at the scene, the police swept the forest and arrested everyone near the Sarco, including a photographer for Volkskrant.”

This is a newly-approved technology in Switzerland. Who is next!?
