The Lead: FBI Caught Working With Russia

former FBI agent Charles McGonigal credit: reuters

An FBI agent who was in charge of investigating the Trump-Russia scandal was arrested on Sunday on charges of working with Russians himself.

Charles McGonigal had been in charge of investigating Oleg Deripaska, a Russian businessman who heads businesses related to aluminum and energy. Investigators for the Mueller investigations looked into him due to his connections with former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort.

Deripaska was first sanctioned in 2018 but the FBI accuses McGonigal of helping him get those sanctions lifted by investigating a rival oligarch in return for “concealed payments from Deripaska.” He is also accused of helping the daughter of a Russian intelligence officer land an internship for the New York Police Department.

McGonigal was released on a $500,000 bond after his arrest.

Skip The Line, Go Right For The Booster

The FDA may change the rules around Covid vaccines, allowing people to skip the original 2-shot vaccination and instead just jump right to whichever booster is currently available.

The FDA outlined this change in advance of the Vaccine and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) meeting on Thursday for voting on this change.

Not only would this change how vaccines are administered, but it would also change how they are made. It would make way for the Covid vaccine to be re-formulated annually, like the flu vaccine, based on the strain of the currently circulating variant.

Will this make much of a difference? I can’t see how someone who skipped the original vaccine is going to jump straight into a booster, given how many people who were vaccinated originally are opting out of boosters.

"The public is voting with their arms if you will and said, 'No. I'm not going to get this. This doesn't make sense to us,'" Dr. Gregory Poland, a vaccine researcher at the Mayo Clinic, told NPR

In related news, the U.S. Court of Appeals is currently hearing a case regarding whether or not the government had the right to implement mask mandates on public transportation. The case could have major implications for future mask and public health mandates.

Artificial intelligence system ChatGPT can pass the Wharton business school exam and earn an MBA, according to a new research paper

Ethan Mollick, a Wharton professor, tested the program’s ability to take business school finals and found that the program received a B to B- on the exam and that the program “demonstrated the capability of performing professional tasks such as writing software code and preparing legal documents.”

Mollick says that ChatGPT may also be able to pass the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam and the Bar exam.

On Monday, Microsoft confirmed that it will invest billions of dollars into ChatGPI maker OpenAI. It did not specify how many billions but it is interesting that this comes just days after Microsoft laid off 10,000 humans.

Are we panicking about the singularity yet?

Go Woke, Go Broke The M&M's Edition

The new “inclusive” M&Ms didn’t do so well. This was the campaign that Mars launched to re-brand M&M color personalities to create a “world where everyone feels they belong.”

Apparently, some people did not feel left out of the M&M color schemes and they did not need them to be updated. In fact, many found it annoying and unnecessarily political so Mars announced on Monday that they would “take an indefinite pause from the spokescandies.”

In a quick pivot, they hired actress Maya Rudolph to be the new spokescandy, er, person. She will appear in the upcoming Super Bowl commercial instead of the anthropomorphized candies. She was given the title “Chief of Fun” at M&M’s in order to “create a world where everyone feels they belong.”
