Lead: Netanyahu Addresses U.S. Congress… Why Now?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address a joint session of Congress today and reportedly hedge his bets by meeting with President Biden and former President Trump. He is also reported to be trying to schedule a meeting with Vice President Harris when her campaign schedule allows.

The Vice President will not attend the address today. House Speaker Mike Johnson threatened to arrest Democratic lawmakers if they protest the speech but now Republican Representative Thomas  Massie says that he won't come either because he calls the speech "political theater on behalf of the State Department" and he won't be used as a prop.

This speech is fraught, to say the least. On Tuesday night, protestors reportedly disrupted a state dinner to protest Netanyahu and Mossad by scattering "mealworms and maggots on the dining tables and unleashed crickets across several floors. The fire alarms were activated for more than half an hour, resulting in significant disorder and disrupting preparations ahead of Netanyahu's scheduled address to Congress."

Netanyahu is facing Israeli protestors too. The families of hostages in Gaza say that he is sabotaging peace deals that would bring their loved ones home. They traveled to Washington to have their message heard. According to Responsible Statescraft

“It is time now to end this war, to end our suffering, and along the way, to end the suffering of millions in Gaza,” said Jonathan Dekel-Chen, the father of one of the hostages, who lives in Israel but refused to travel with Netanyahu . “I implore Democrats and Republicans to do all that you can to let our Prime Minister know that the U.S. knows that the time is now.”

NATO Gets Ready For War

We are being warmed up to the idea of a military draft by NATO. The military organization have set a goal of adding 300,000 soldiers in the next month and another half a million in six months.

Why do they need that? For a war with…Russia? Iran? China? NATO repeatedly told us that they are a defensive operation during their Washington D.C. summit this month but they sure to seem hellbent on offensive operations in conflicts they are not a party to.

Most NATO countries do not practice a draft but that is changing. Latvia revived its draft practices, Norway, the UK and Germany have proposed doing the same. How long before this becomes a prerequisite to a NATO membership?

A New Covid Variant in Greece (yes that's a man wearing a mask on a beach)

Experts say that there is a new FLiRT Covid variant in Greece.

Greece’s National Public Health Organization, EODY, reported "669 new Covid patients admitted from July 8 to 14- a 44% increase in the weekly average compared to four weeks ago." They say that this has resulted in 26 Covid deaths but we never do know if these are deaths FROM Covid or deaths of people WITH Covid.

Hospitals in Athens reintroduced mask mandates because I guess they don't study the data on masking…

Vatican Tells Zelensky To Do 10 Hail Marys And Try Again

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky told the Vatican that he wants the war to end by the end of the year but the Vatican says that his peace plan is still insufficient.

The Vatican's Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, said this about Zelensky's so-called "plan":

"It seems to me that we are still far away from the resolution [of the conflict]. We have President Zelensky’s peace proposal, which the Holy See supported immediately, particularly in the sphere of humanitarian issues. It represents an attempt to find peace, although it has gaps in the sense of not involving Russia. This plan can help, but it is not sufficient. I hope other formulae can be found to pave the way for the talks."

This is because Zelensky's plan would require Russia to withdraw from the Donbas regions and Crimea, all of which voted to join Russia because Ukraine had tortured and attacked those regions since 2014. That's not a peace plan. That's a fantasy and Russia continues to say as much.

Russia says that they are not going to participate in another peace summit without more concessions because “nobody trusts [Zelensky].” Nobody should.
