πΊπ³ U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned yesterday that the world is heading toward a "wider war" as the conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate.
π· A new Covid-19 mask-wearing study examined the data from 78 randomized trials and found wearing masks makes "little to no difference" in stopping the spread of the virus. The CDC continues to say that wearing a mask stops the spread.
The United Nations laid out a gloomy forecast by the Secretary General Antonio Guterres. The speech was a roadmap to United Nations priorities including climate change, global peace and tackling misinformation.
Guterres says that the U.N. calls "for action from everywhere with influence on the spread of 'mis- and disinformation' on the Internet." Given the UN's track record for disseminating misinformation of their own about, oh, pick a topic: Chinese forced labor camps, Covid, nuclear power plants, the war in Ukraine, Syrian chemical attacks. I could go on. The point is: should the UN be the one to push for government action against misinformation? This would seem a direct attack not on misinformation but on any speech that questions global narratives.
Guterres spoke of the doomsday clock that was recently moved a little closer to global catastrophe and a report last week said that the world is moving towards a "polycrisis," meaning many global problems at once, conflating and confounding one another.
European leaders will meet in Brussels this week to discuss Ukraine, the economy and mass migration.
Calling all Democratic politicians! Bankrupt crypto exchange FTX would like its donations back.
The company said in a statement this weekend that "political figures, political action funds, and other recipients of contributions or other payments that were made by or at the direction of the FTX Debtors, Samuel Bankman-Fried or other officers or principles of the FTX Debtors" must be returned by February 28, 2023. If they do not return the money, FTX will pull them into bankruptcy court requiring the return of payments with interest.
So who will cough up these ill-gotten gains? We knew that Beto O'Rourke said that he would return his FTX donations and the Democratic National Committee will too. He also donated generously to Maxine Waters and President Biden.
A lot of FTX donations also went to the Ukraine Central Bank. Do they also have to give that back?

The death toll is now over 5,000 in Turkey and Syria after a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Monday. If you'd like to help in some way, you do well to remember that the U.S. has had what many call "sanctions of mass destruction" on Syria for decades. Rebuilding cannot happen with these in place.
We spoke at length last week about why the U.S. is so aggressive in sanctioning Syria when we discussed the United Nations' bogus report about chemical weapons attacks. To sum up: The U.S. does not want Secular Arab Nationalism to take hold in those regions, to grow stronger and become self-sufficient. They want U.S. interests to profit from business in the Middle East and Syria's leaders want Arab independence and those are conflicting goals.
That is why those sanctions are still crippling Syria's economy and will continue to do so as the region recovers from devastation. In 2019, a senior U.S. official admitted that the U.S. was keeping Syria in a state of rubble. Journalist Aaron Mate points out that the "US military occupies 1/3 of Syria, stealing its oil and wheat. Combined with the US sanctions, this military occupation deprives Syria of the fuel it needs to power vehicles and machines. That will make it even more difficult to rescue people trapped under the rubble."
So if you want to express your support for Syria online, and you are a Westerner, do not forget the crippling sanctions that remain in place. Maybe you can do better by asking your local politician to stop this rather than send a GoFundMe that may or may not make it to Syria because of sanctions.
The Red Cross allows for blood donations from homosexual men after a three-month celibacy period. They say that this is a requirement of the FDA. But now if this same man wants to identify as a woman, they can get around this requirement.
Also, the Red Cross has different height and weight requirements for men and women to be eligible donors. But one could get around these requirements if they change their gender.
This is a baffling rejection of human biology, especially when you consider that the CDC's own data shows that 42% of trans-identified males living in urban centers were HIV positive.
