Lead: White House Promises Escorts. Navy Says It Can’t.
The White House is clearly panicking that Iran is stalling global trade through the Strait of Hormuz but Reuters reports that the U.S. Navy cannot make good on the White House offer to escort shipping vessels through.
Last week, President Trump promised that the U.S. Navy would escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz “if necessary” and offer insurance to any vessel that was harmed in the process. That is easy to say on social media but not easy to do in real life.
“The U.S. Navy has held regular briefings with shipping and oil industry counterparts and has said during those briefings it is unable to provide escorts for the time being, three shipping industry sources familiar with the matter said,” according to Reuters.
MAGA influencers are suggesting that shipping tankers are being too wimpy. I volunteer them to captain the first ship to try it!
To help make up for this oil gap, President Trump announced a new oil refinery to be opened in Texas. This can’t really be credited to the Trump administration though. It was announced in 2024 before he took office.
Will one domestic oil refinery make up for the lost global trade? You probably can work that math out for yourself.

The Washington Post claims that Iran is amplifying the Epstein files in an effort “to erode public support for the joint U.S.-Israel military operation.”
How do they know this? A State Department-funded think tank called the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) said so. I know, I laughed too, but it is true.
They say that “Iranian state media has sought to portray [Western] leaders as part of a corrupt and depraved ‘Epstein class’ or ‘Epstein regime.'”
Why would they need to do that? Western leaders have done that to themselves by protecting the Epstein files and those in it for decades.
The Post suggests that anything you see online indicating that Iran has hit U.S. and Israeli targets could be a part of this foreign influence campaign.
They also say this: “The conflict has also sparked a sharp rise in antisemitic content, according to researchers from the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish civil rights organization — some of it seeking to link Epstein, who was Jewish, to the conflict.”
The Anti-Defamation League is also a funder of the ISD.
Has the U.S. government ever proven it when they claim that Russia, China, and Iran are conducting foreign influence campaigns when presented with inconvenient truths? Not to my recollection. My only recollection of a proven foreign influence campaign was run by the U.S. State Department.,
So is Iran amplifying the Epstein story to stoke the antiwar movement? I doubt it. The Epstein story is legitimately important to Americans and we legitimately want to know how his connections to Israel may have led us into a war we never wanted.
