The Lead: Just Act Like You Want Peace

credit: bbc

The Washington Post this weekend reported that the U.S. wants Ukraine to signal peace to Russia but not actually begin peace talks. Put another way, just pretend you want peace so you can go on asking for money and weapons.

The article says: “The request by American officials is not aimed at pushing Ukraine to the negotiating table, these people said. Rather, they called it a calculated attempt to ensure the government in Kyiv maintains the support of other nations facing constituencies wary of fueling a war for many years to come.”

Ukraine President Zelensky signed a law forbidding peace talks with Russia a few weeks ago. If this article is true, the West wants that law retracted to make it “seem” as though Ukraine could talk of peace in order to get other countries to continue supporting Ukraine.

So in other words, reverse-psychology for all other Western leaders? Would this work? Or would it have worked had this article not been published?

The official quoted in the story says that “Ukraine fatigue is a real thing” and that the U.S. has to renew enthusiasm somehow. OR they could try for actual peace!

The U.S. and U.K. are Normalizing Nazism

The United States and United Kingdom voted againstUnited Nations resolution aimed at stopping Nazism. You read that right. As in, let that Nazi stuff be, just ignore it? What?

The UN held a vote for this resolution on Friday. It was passed with 105 countries voting in favor of stopping Nazis and 52 voting against it. Why would someone NOT want to combat Nazism? Western leaders say that it is because Russia uses the pretext of "fighting neo-Nazism" in Ukraine and they are worried that they would validate that pretext for war.

But… there are actual Nazis in Ukraine and it's not just a fringe group. Since 2014 the Nazi lead Ukrainian Azov battalion has been slaughtering ethnic Russians in former eastern Ukraine in violation of the Minsk Peace Accords. More than 15,000 have been killed in what is unequivicolly a genocide.

As NBC News points out Ukraine has a real Nazi problem that has deep roots in the country's military and government. The United States acknowledged this many times and refused to send money before the war in Ukraine began. Israel has been warning about this for years. Now suddnely the West can't speak out about it because they are afraid to confuse their public relations? We live in troubling times.

Protests For Peace in Europe

credit: getty

Tens of thousands of people marched for peace in Rome this weekend. They demanded that Italy take a role in ending the conflict in Ukraine, not prolonging it.

Italy's new Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has pledged to continue support for Ukraine even though she indicated that she would promote peace on the campaign trail. But the Italian economy is toiling with near 12% inflation largely as a result of energy sanctions.

Italian politician Giuseppe Conte said that the strategy of continuing a prolonged war in Ukraine "is leading only to escalation."

counterprotest also happened this weekend in Milan with leaders there urging for continued support of Ukraine.

Introducing a new climate term: WASP

credit: wwf

The COP27 began this weekend and introduced a fairly new concept for climate change called WASP. It has nothing to do with insects or religion. It stands for World Adaptation Science Programme.

The word "adaptation" has my attention. Measured climate experts have long said that humans must "adapt" rather than take drastic measures that harm the poorest populations. This means that communities should be moved out of at-risk locations. Or places that get hotter should invest in air conditioning. Or food production is moved to better-suited locations. It does NOT mean ripping resources away from people that have little to begin with.

A lot of these policies will require money and the COP27 will start to calculate that. Should wealthy countries contribute to funds to help poorer countries respond? Leaders will debate that this week and we will watch this conversation carefully.

News By The Numbers

1,560 light years. That is how "close" the closest black hole is to Earth. The Gaia BH1 is a new discovery! It is 10 times more massive than our sun and twice as close as the one we previously thought was the closest black hole to earth.

$1.6 billion. That was the amount at stake for this weekend's Powerball. The winning numbers were 28, 45, 53, 56 and 59.

$200 billion. That is how much profit U.S. oil companies have made since the Russia/Ukraine conflict began.
