Lead: Confusing Threads: The FBI’s Odd Case Against Tyler Robinson
The FBI released a text thread from Tyler Robinson, the alleged killer of Charlie Kirk, with his gay lover/roommate. It is…not what I would call convincing.
you weren’t the one who did it right? ??
I am, I’m sorry
These are supposedly between the killer and his gay lover/roommate. ABC News called the text thread “very touching” because the killer calls his lover “my love.”
Ted Bundy was loving and endearing with his victims too before he brutally murdered them. Was that touching?
There is also the narrative about his clothing, which is strange on its own: surveillance shows Robinson in a maroon T-shirt, light shorts, and a black cap before the shooting, but prosecutors say he changed outfits after the attack, only to later put the same maroon shirt and shorts back on by the time he was arrested. That odd cycle—changing to hide evidence, then returning to the original look—doesn’t make much sense, especially since authorities also claim he tried to discard some of the clothes.
The back-and-forth adds another layer of inconsistency to an already puzzling case.
No-Confidence, No Problem: Von der Leyen Clings On
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is being attacked by the Left and the Right and facing two no-confidence votes in October. Don’t worry, though, this slippery lady always survives scandal.
The Left is accusing her of pushing lopsided trade deals (like the new EU-US agreement and the EU-Mercosur pact), mishandling the war in Gaza, failing on climate commitments, and ignoring Europe’s social crisis. Meanwhile, the Right says she’s wrecked competitiveness, botched migration, and pursued peace and trade policies that weaken Europe.
Neither side is likely to get the two-thirds supermajority needed to topple her, but the twin attacks reveal something: von der Leyen is increasingly mistrusted across the political spectrum — and her grip on Brussels may be weaker than the vote totals suggest.
But Europe is stuck with her! She was re-elected by Parliament (NOT the European people) in July of 2024 and she has a five-year term so she’s locked in until 2029.

The U.S. government banned TikTok claiming China might spy on your data. Now it will be owned by the U.S. government — so you can be sure they will.
The American people got played on this one.
According to Reuters, “TikTok’s U.S. operations would be controlled by an investor consortium including Oracle, Silver Lake and Andreessen Horowitz, under a framework the U.S. and China are finalizing, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.”
Users will download a brand new app, run entirely on American infrastructure with US-controlled algorithms.

What’s Trending?

This videoof beachgoers in Greece is trending. The Greek men are seen pushing a boat full of migrants back to sea. According to The Telegraph, “the remote island, which has a permanent population of just 70 people, is reportedly ‘at breaking point’ from the surge in arrivals from North Africa.”
Royal Caribbean is trending because a cruise ship had to turn back to port on Monday after a fight between two passengers left one person seriously injured. This is why we can’t have nice things.
Coachella is trending because the lineup for the 2026 music festival was announced. Sabrina Carpenter and Justin Bieber will headline.
440. That is how many excess deaths can be attributed to the Los Angeles fires, according to a new study.
20. That is how many bikers from rival gangs got in a fight outside a sports bar in Long Island on Sunday. At least four people were stabbed and seven face rioting charges.
Maui’s Suicide Spike: A Cautionary Tale of Western Intervention
A new study estimates that the suicide rate in Maui spiked by 97% in the month of August 2023 fires. The rate of suicide reached 7.89 per 100,000 people, which was the highest rate since 2014.
For other Hawaiian communities, the rate of suicide was up that month by 46%.
Why? Likely the trauma of losing homes, loved ones, and a sense of security can lead to severe psychological distress, increasing the risk of suicide and substance abuse.
The authors of this study emphasize “the importance of rapidly deploying suicide and overdose prevention interventions during wildfire response and recovery phases and ensuring that interventions reach communities beyond areas directly impacted.”
Does it?
It’s worth considering the lessons from Ethan Watters’ groundbreaking book, “Crazy Like Us.” Watters shows how unstandardized Western therapy models can sometimes do more harm than good and undermine age-old coping mechanisms built into strong communities.
Watters recounts the story of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which devastated coastal areas of Sri Lanka and other countries. Following the tsunami, an influx of Western mental health professionals flooded the region, offering therapy and psychiatric medications, which led to higher rates of alcoholism and depression.
This may be an important cautionary tale for Maui to say “no thank you” to Western models of suicide “prevention.”
