Lead: War with Everyone

The United States will send more troops to the Middle East to support Israel’s attacks in Lebanon, Yemen and Gaza. Israel says that it killed a senior Hezbollah leader, Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah. President Biden called this kill a “measure of justice for his many victims, including thousands of Americans, Israelis, and Lebanese civilians.”

Now politicians are strongly signaling for a war with Iran. The President’s statement says that it supports war against “against Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and any other Iranian-supported terrorist groups.” Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said that Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austen “stressed that the United States is determined to prevent Iran and Iranian-backed partners and proxies from exploiting the situation or expanding the conflict. Secretary Austin made clear that should Iran, its partners, or its proxies use this moment to target American personnel or interests in the region, the United States will take every necessary measure to defend our people.”

Defend the American people from Iran? That’s what they are signaling to us now?

A coalition of 57 Arab and Muslim countries have said unequivocally that they will offer Israel a peace deal and guarantee security for Israel in exchange for a Palestinian state and an end of occupation. Is anyone listening? Peace!? Anyone?

Both the Harris/Walz campaign and the Trump/Vance campaign support this. On this, they agree. President Trump’s son-in-law and first administration adviser Jared Kushner said this on X: “The main issue between Lebanon and Israel is Iran; otherwise there is a lot of benefit for the people of both countries from working together. The right move now for America would be to tell Israel to finish the job. It’s long overdue. And it’s not only Israel’s fight.”

Yikes.

As the U.S. preps for war with Iran, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has arrived in Iran on an official visit.

Hurricane

It’s a perfect storm. Millions of people are suffering from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and a major port strike is about to happen, meaning supplies will be at risk.

The hurricane has left over two million homes and businesses without power. At least 102 people are reported dead across six states. Over 200 people have had to be rescued by helicopter. It’s major.

President Biden said that the federal government has “given everything that we have.” Why does hen ever say that to Ukraine?

When resources are needed the most, they may not be there. Over 85,000 dockworkers representing International Longshoremen’s Association from Texas to Maine will strike on Tuesday due to failed wage negotiations. This will impact 36 ports and basically the entire eastern seaboard.

Oddly enough, while consumer products may be majorly affected, the union said that it will “continue to honor its century-plus pledge to handle all military cargo.” Your supplies may stop but war supplies won’t. Is that a relief?

ICE Document

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) knows about 662,556 noncitizens with criminal histories but only has about 15,000 of them detained. Where are the rest? They’re not sure.

Of these offenders that are known, over 100,000 are accused of assault, 15,000 are accused of burglary, 70,000 are accused of “dangerous” drug crimes, 15,000 are accused of murder, 3,000 are accused of kidnapping, and over 30,000 are accused of sexual assault or sex offenses.

Why does the government know about these criminals and not detain or deport them? A letter reporting this from ICE to Representative Tony Gonzales explains that they only have about 41,000 beds to house detainees. Also, local law officials won’t work with ICE once a criminal is identified because – you guessed it – sanctuary cities. The letter points out that “‘sanctuary” policies can end up shielding dangerous criminals, who often victimize those same communities.”

News By The Numbers

$4 million. That is how much Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” made at the box office this weekend. Considering is spent over $100 million to make it, we can safely call that a flop.

14 points. That is Kamala Harris’ lead over Donald Trump with Latin voters, according to a new poll. That is the lowest Democratic lead of any Democratic nominee for the last four Presidential elections.

$7 million. That is how much Netflix co-founder and chair Reed Hastings donated to the Kamala Harris campaign. In the days after this endorsement, Netflix experienced a surge of subscription cancelations, “the single worst day for Netflix cancellations this year” according to Bloomberg.

What’s Trending?

Koala Airlines is trending because of a new airline launching in Australia that will compete with Qantas and Virgin.

Drake Hogestyn is trending because the soap opera actor died this weekend at the age of 70.

John Ashton is trending because the actor from Beverly Hills Cop also died this weekend.

California

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a formal apology for California’s role in the enslavement of black people.

California was never a slave-owning state, although, according to the apology, California did allow people to live in California with slaves brought from other states and enforced fugitive slave laws until 1865.

Okay. Will California next apologize to the Mexican population for taking that land? If that’s what we’re doing…

Also, I might find this more genuine if California also concerned itself with the CURRENT slavery that happens at its Southern Border. The Department of Homeland Security recently raised the flag about over 300,000 unaccompanied minors that have crossed into the U.S. and gone missing, many of them sold into forced labor and sex labor. While California is worried about slavery, now is a good time to stop it as well as apologize for the slavery that was enforced more than 150 years ago, right?
