Lead: Texas Not Allowed to Defend Itself

credit: reuters

Texas still cannot enforce its Senate Bill 4 and arrest illegal immigrants. A federal appeals court ruled that the state still cannot put this bill into effect while it is litigated.

Last week the bill was put into effect, then stayed, then put back, then stayed again. This week it is again kept in limbo while the Biden administration fights to let illegal immigrants continue to flow through the Southern border with no consequence.

Texas Senate Bill 4 makes it a crime to cross the border outside of ports of entry, punishable by up to 6 months in prison for first-time offenders and 20 years in prison for repeat offenders. More than 9 million illegal immigrants have crossed into the U.S. from Mexico since October of 2021, according to Customs and Border Protection data. The Biden administration is using taxpayer dollars to stop this bill from being implemented so that they can continue to do nothing about illegal immigration.

Resigning in Protest Over Israel

Another State Department official has resigned over U.S. support of Israel. In a letter published to CNN, Annelle Sheline says that the Biden administration “is directly enabling what the International Court of Justice has said could plausibly be a genocide in Gaza." Here is an excerpt from her letter:

Whatever credibility the United States had as an advocate for human rights has almost entirely vanished since the war began. Members of civil society have refused to respond to my efforts to contact them. Our office seeks to support journalists in the Middle East; yet when asked by NGOs if the US can help when Palestinian journalists are detained or killed in Gaza, I was disappointed that my government didn’t do more to protect them. Ninety Palestinian journalists in Gaza have been killed in the last five months, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. That is the most recorded in any single conflict since the CPJ started collecting data in 1992.

By resigning publicly, I am saddened by the knowledge that I likely foreclose a future at the State Department. I had not initially planned a public resignation. Because my time at State had been so short — I was hired on a two-year contract — I did not think I mattered enough to announce my resignation publicly. However, when I started to tell colleagues of my decision to resign, the response I heard repeatedly was, “Please speak for us.”

Sheline’s resignation is going viral. She is the third government official to publicly resign after Josh Paul, who resigned in October, and Tariq Habash who resigned in January.

Will it matter? It doesn’t seem to. The State Department responded to a UN report on human rights in Gaza saying that it is biased and the reporter is antisemitic.

Disney vs. DeSantis Wraps Up

credit: disney

Disney has come to a settlement with the state of Florida that will allow the company to keep doing business in a way that is favorable to Disney.

Two years ago, Disney decided to oppose the state’s ban on sexual education for grades 3 and younger. This caused the governor to revoke Disney’s autonomy in the city where the Disney parks reside. Disney took this to the courts, and now a settlement has been reached. It will give Disney covenants and a development agreement similar to what it had before.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says this is a vindication, and Disney says they are happy about this. It is a lesson to us all that big business will usually get its way and that Disney should not have wasted our time trying to do politics. Nothing was accomplished in slowing down the state’s education ban. Taxpayer dollars were spent fighting this legislation. What a waste of time.

The FBI Watches You on YouTube

credit: istock

The FBI is watching you on YouTube. I know this isn’t shocking, but it’s still upsetting.

This was reported recently by Forbes. They found that Federal investigators ordered Google to provide information on all viewers of certain YouTube channels and videos, including their names, addresses, telephone numbers and user activity. A judge approved their requests but there is no proof that Google complied.

Privacy experts say that it is pretty terrifying to think that the government could track you just because of what the algorithm shows you! This is scary but not surprising. Former State Department Cyber expert Michael Benz pointed out on Tucker Carlson’s X show recently that Google was started by the CIA so there is no reason to think that they would not continue to comply with their paymasters.
