Lead: Israel Did What?

Hezbollah’s leader accused Israel of “crossing all red lines” by detonating personal devices across Lebanon this week. The U.S. State Department said, "Huh? What?"

White House National Security spokesperson John Kirby repeatedly said "I don't have anything more to share" when asked about this. All he could confirm was that the U.S. "was not involved."

Would the U.S. speak out against remote devices used as weapons in civilian areas in ANY other country? Let's say China did this. Or Russia. Would we be this blasé about it? Clearly not!

Journalist Caitlin Johnstone puts this into context: "It is worth reminding readers that in 2017, a leaked State Department memo explained in plain language that it is standing US policy to overlook the abuses of US allies while denouncing the abuses of US enemies in order to undermine enemies and show other countries the perks of being aligned with the United States."

So this is in keeping with that hypocrisy.

Israel has reportedly followed up this attack with military strikes in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah launched rockets in return, injuring eight Israelis.

Rate-Cut-A-Pooloozza

The U.S. stock market responded well to the aggressive interest rate cut on Thursday. The Federal Reserve lowered the interest rate by 0.5%. They are expected to lower it again in the coming months, the next cut coming in November.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped over 400 points on this news and other indexes popped too. Not to be outdone gold, silver, and Bitcoin prices surged.

This is the first rate cut since 2020. In early 2022, when rates were near 0, the Fed raised rates 11 times in 16 months and then left it unchanged for more than a year. Fed Chair Jerome Powell says that he really wants inflation to go below 2%. We'd all like that!

The job market is dropped and home sales are down too.

I've Got a Peace Plan

Don't worry, Ukrainian President Zelensky has a "victory plan" and it's ready now.

On Monday, he said the plan was 90% ready but he must have pulled some all-nighters because he says it's good to go now.

On X he posted this: "Everything has been thoroughly worked through. The most important thing now is having the determination to implement it. There is no alternative to peace — no freezing of the war, or any other manipulations that would simply shift Russian aggression to another stage. We need reliable and lasting security for Ukraine, and, by extension, for all of Europe. That’s what we’re working towards."

The plan predictably involves getting more help from the U.S. He is planning another trip to Washington to present this plan. He's like a house guest you can't get rid of – only people die because of it.

Both Vice President Harris and former President Trump are expected to meet with Zelensky when he comes to town.

Media's Response to Trump Assassination Attempts

credit: nypost

A media research group found that 95% of the coverage of the second assassination attempt on President Trump was negative. Shocker.

The Media Research Group is a conservative group but let's see what they say:

"MRC analysts analyzed all 69 minutes of campaign coverage on the evening newscasts from September 15 through September 17. The attempted assassination was by far the dominant story:  48 minutes of airtime, or almost 70% of all campaign news." They found that "while the attempted assassination dominated campaign coverage, these networks’ anti-Trump spin was nearly as bad as it could be: 95% negative, vs. just five percent positive."

What do they mean negative and how could this story be positive at all? They said that the networks blamed Trump himself for bringing this on himself. NBC's Lester Holt said that the president's assassination came "amid increasingly fierce rhetoric on the campaign trail itself."

But what about the notion that this cuts both ways? That perhaps Democrats are also using fierce rhetoric? According to the report, "out of 48 minutes of coverage of the attempted shooting, the three networks spent less than two minutes (1 minute, 53 seconds) on the possibility that Democrats could share the blame."

News By The Numbers

£10. That is how much Americans will have to pay for a Visa to enter the U.K. starting in January.

$50 billion. That is how much the federal government would pay out to victims of America's nuclear mining program, which ended in 1970, if Republicans in the Senate had their say. They voted to extend the payouts through anyone who suffered up to 1990 but the House killed the bill since people who were harmed after 1970 were harmed by private business, not the government.

120 years. That is the maximum prison sentence that a 27-year-old man in Nebraska received because he posed as a high school student and sexually abused girls as young as 13. He actually attended school for up to 50 days in order to gain these children's trust as a peer. Prosecutors called him a "predator of the worst kind." He is not eligible for parole for at least 40 years.
