Happy Thursday. The U.K. has clarified that you can die at the same time as the Queen. Rumor had it that private funerals would not be allowed on the same day as the Queen’s funeral but that is not true. Funerals will be allowed. Banking will not.

The Lead: The Fog of War

Two Presidents at war. Two dangerous and mysterious accidents. Can this be happenstance?

Russian President Putin was reported to have survived an assasination attempt on Wednesday. His limousine was allegedly hit by a “loud bang” in the front wheel. I know a bang can’t hit an object. These reports may be lost in translation. This comes just two days after an associate of his was killed in mysterious circumstances. In fact, several associates of Putin’s have been killed recently in mysterious circumstances.

Ukrainian President Zelensky was involved in a car accident on the same day but he is said to be unharmed after being transported by ambulance to the hospital. His vehicle collided with another at an intersection and the other driver was hospitalized. The car collided with the President’s car and his escort vehicles too. Law enforcement is investigating the incident.

Boosters on Campus

credit: abcnews

new study asserts that Covid boosters for college students is an unethical risk.

This comes from researchers from Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and many other respected universities. They say that boosting college aged students “may cause a net expected harm” since hospitalization rates for Covid in that population is far lower than vaccine injuries.

In fact the ratio is shocking! For every hospitalization prevented, between 19 and 98 “serious adverse events” will happen in a college-aged person. What!? They further say that “given the high prevalence of post-infection immunity, this risk-benefit profile is even less favourable.” Meaning that people who were infected have high immunity so we have no business taking the risk of boosting them.

Yet universities are still threatening disenrollment for students who are not vaccinated or fully boosted. Where is the sense in that!?

Serbia's Predicament

credit: ap

Serbian President Vucic is between a rock and a hard place but at least he’s candid about it. Serbia has applied for European Union membership but is finding it hard to play nicely with the EU.

The EU wants Serbia to play tough with Russia and Serbia refuses. They do not want to replicate the economic implosion that other European countries are facing due to Russian sanctions. This refusal has brought a lot of heat down on the President, particularly from Germany and France.

An MP asked Vucic if Serbia’s EU aspirations were “a fairy tale.” He said this in response:

“I don’t believe in fairy tales. I believe in a realistic and rational approach. How can we say we don’t want the EU? Who will protect us? Do you know how many people work for German, French, Czech and Polish companies in our country? Do you think we haven’t heard threats about them withdrawing investments if we don’t recognize Kosovo’s independence? Do we have to sacrifice all that so we could tell someone they’re a ‘fairy tale’? We can’t be driven by emotions.”

So what is he to do? He says that he will maintain neutrality but warned that Serbia could become collateral damage anyway.

A Late Night Dinner

new study shows that eating at night could contribute to anxiety and depression. Researchers say that this might explain why night shift workers are more prone to neurological disease.

The study showed that eating before bed contributed to a 26% increase in depression and 16% increase in anxiety. People who only ate during daytime hours were less prone to these things.

Anecdotally, we can attest to this. Giving up our bedtime wine and chip hour has significantly improved our sleep and health. It was fun while it lasted but not worth the sacrifice.
