In Case You Missed It.

🗳️ Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to certify the results of the 2024 Presidential election today.

💰 President Biden passed a bill to give social security benefits to people who worked in “eligible public service fields.”

🤦🏼 The White House says that the outgoing Biden administration will take action to ban drilling in over 625 million acres, including “the entire U.S. East Coast, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific off the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and California, and additional portions of the Northern Bering Sea in Alaska.”

❄️ Hundreds of thousands of people are without power across seven states due to a major winter storm.

🏅 President Biden awarded 19 people with the Presidential Medal of Freedom including Hillary Clinton, George Soros and Bono. Hillary Clinton who masterminded the war in Libya and led us through hell with Russiagate. I guess the medal means that she was free to do all of that.

🇬🇧 Elon Musk has called for the Reform Party to replace Nigel Farage.

🗄️ The Wall Street Journal reports that 1.6 million office workers are struggling to find work. The media told us that joblessness was not a problem during the election though.

Lead: Trudeau Resigns

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned today. He said he has fought for Canada since 2015 but the division in government has made it impossible to govern.

In resigning today, Trudeau nullified the need for an emergency meeting of Liberal legislators that was scheduled for Wednesday. Trudeau had managed to escape calls for his resignation before Christmas but he is expected to lose the next election badly. His popularity has plummeted in the wake of his authoritarian handling of the Covid pandemic and constant support of foreign wars and government expansion, which has tanked the Canadian economy.

The Prime Minister announced a prorogue, or suspension of government, until his party can announce a new leader, which he said will happen in March. However, this could be a ploy to deny Canadians an election, delaying the scheduled October 2025 vote for up to six months.

 Military Under Lockdowns

U.S. military bases are under tightened security since the alleged attackers in two terror attacks on New Year’s Day were U.S. military members.

In Las Vegas, active-duty Green Beret Master Sgt. Matthew Alan Livelsberger allegedly “drove a rented Tesla Cybertruck in front of the Trump Hotel, which then exploded, setting off fuel and fireworks inside the car.” In New Orleans, Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar, “drove a rented truck into a crowd and opened fire on people before being shot and killed.”

Authorities say the two attacks are not connected.

The FBI says that the Jabbar crossed “state and international borders” to carry out this attack and that he used Meta smart glasses to map out the attack. The FBI’s video shows Shamsud-Din Jabbar wearing the glasses as he planted explosives around the city.

ABC reports that he had traveled to Egypt and Canada in 2023 and left a video for his family admitting to having joined ISIS. Jabbar was shot dead during the attack so investigators are piecing together clues but authorities still insist that he acted alone. Will those Meta glasses tell the same story?

Get Ready For The New Pandemic

A new virus is spreading in China called HMPV, the human metapneumovirus. Although images of Chinese people in masks are trending, sparking fears of a new pandemic, the Chinese government said that this is a normal winter occurrence.

The CDC concurs. The agency says that their data shows “HMPV to be most active during late winter and spring in temperate climates. HMPV, RSV, and influenza can circulate simultaneously during the respiratory virus season.”

Chinese Spokesperson Mao Ning said that in China, the HMPV “appears to be less severe and spread on a smaller scale compared with the previous year. I can assure you that the Chinese government cares about the health of Chinese citizens and foreigners in China. It is safe to travel in China.”

HMPV has infected fourteen children in China, sparking fears that this outbreak would cause wider panic than Covid-19 because of its ability to infect children.

New Jersey Teachers

In New Jersey, teachers no longer have to pass a basic literacy test to get the job. This is from Act 1669 that went into effect on January 1.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed this into office in the state budget. New Jersey residents did not get to vote on it.

The bill says that anyone seeking a teaching certificate does not need to “complete a Commissioner of Education-approved test of basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills including.” So what is the certificate for if you don’t have to qualify for it? Just a way for the government to collect fees for a document?

Legislators argued that this test was unnecessary if teachers had already finished their university requirements and they said that this would increase the diversity of the teacher pool. Which is the racism of low expectations, indicating that people of color can’t be expected to pass standardized test.

Erika Sanzi, a former educator and opponent of this says that it is a way for the National Education Association (NEA) to increase their number of due-paying members.

“These are low-rigor tests. We’re not talking about the LSAT here,” she says. “The fact that the failure rates on these tests have been so high for so long, that is a problem. That’s really an indictment of not only of the education system that these aspiring teachers are coming out of but the colleges of education that give them a degree even though they’re not remotely qualified.”

New York, California and Arizona have made similar moves dropping basic requirements for teachers.
