Lead: A New Government Shutdown Looms
House Speaker Mike Johnson says that he will vote to fund the government when the U.S. hits the debt ceiling (yes again) only if the bill includes a provision that requires states to obtain proof of citizenship for voter registration.
That's nice but he caved on the last spending bill when Republicans wanted border security and an end to funding the war in Ukraine so let's see how he plays this one. Even if he were to draw the line, the Democratic Senate would never go for it.
If no deal is reached, the debt ceiling will trigger on September 30. There will inevitably be another late-night standoff over this just weeks before the election. Hold on.
Mainstream Media Suddenly Embraces Warmonger Dick Cheney
I am losing my mind that the media thinks that Former Republican Vice President and neocon war lover Dick Cheney's endorsement of Kamala Harris is influential. That same media damn well knows that Dick Cheney masterminded the horrific war in Iraq, leading to the death of millions! They know that he masterminded the Patriot Act, which led to the spying on us all. This is not controversial! They let Christian Bale play this out in a major Hollywood film!
And yet this weekend CNN said that his endorsement holds more weight than the Trump endorsement of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.!? They are pretending that this is a major betrayal by an entrenched Republican. It isn't. Cheney is a war lover and so are the Democrats. This endorsement is on brand for the Democratic ticket.
When the most prominent bloodguilty politician of our time endorses your candidate, maybe that's not a great sign, huh?

No Election Interference Found

A new U.S. government report shows that intelligence has not found evidence of "any foreign actor seeking to interfere in the conduct of the 2024 elections."
This new report comes from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in collaboration with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the Federal Bureau of Intelligence (FBI.)" It shows that "Russia, Iran, and China are trying by some measure to exacerbate divisions in U.S. society for their own benefit" but not "enable election interference, especially cyber or physical disruptions of election infrastructure." That means that they may exploit our own news cycle and rile us up about certain topics to influence voters. The U.S. does this too in Arabic-speaking countries. We know this from the Graphika Stanford report on the matter.
China and Iran have expressly denied doing this.
News By The Numbers

$110 million. That is how much the Beetlejuice sequel made in its opening weekend at the box office. The original film only made $8 million in its opening weekend in 1988 but it gained steam as it became a pop culture staple of the 1980s.
4 in 10. That is how many pet cats can play fetch if they choose to, according to a new study. The problematic part is "if they choose to." They have to be in the mood.
721. That is how many cases are under investigation from an orthopedic surgeon in the UK who allegedly harmed children with his alleged malpractice. Some children had limbs amputated because of his alleged incompetence.
What's Trending?

Cassowary is trending because the world's "most dangerous bird" hatched at a bird park in the U.K. This bird has killed humans but the bird sanctuary thinks they've got this under control… which is the plot of Jurassic Park.
Prince Hisahito is trending because the Japanese prince turned 18, making him the first male royal family member to reach adulthood in almost four decades.
Cell Phones and Cancer
Good news everyone! The World Health Organization commissioned a study and found that cell phones do not cause cancer. Well that's a relief.
Only…it's the WHO and they lied about the pandemic and the Covid vaccine so what are we to make of this?
The study was an analysis of existing research studying cell phones as a carcinogen. They took "5,000 studies published between 1994 and 2022" but they only included 63 in their final analysis. So wait, out of 5,000 studies, they selected 63 and are using those to tell us with certainty that there is no link between cell phones and cancer?
“I’m quite confident with our conclusion. And what makes us quite confident is … even though mobile phone use has skyrocketed, brain tumour rates have remained stable,” the author's study told The Guardian.
The WHO will use this information in their "Environmental Health Criterion Monograph on the health effects from radio wave exposure."
