The Lead: U.S. Approves More Money For War

Ukraine shelled a bakery in Luhansk on Sunday, killing at least 28 people. This is the territory that Ukraine is trying to “get back.” The same territory that they’ve been torturing for a decade.

According to Reuters, this murder was done "with U.S.-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS)."

And the U.S. is about to supply them with more. The Senate unveiled a massive "bipartisan” $118 billion spending bill on Friday which includes $60 billion in aid to Ukraine, $14 billion for Israel, $4 billion for anyone who is fighting China, and more utter nonsense.

Why would Congress do this if Ukraine keeps attacking civilians? Do they not know? This is the second major civilian attack in 2024 by the Ukrainian army. As Antiwar puts it, “Ukrainian attacks inside Russian-controlled Ukraine and inside Russian territory have increased as it has become clear that Ukrainian forces can’t gain any territory.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson has said he would not vote for this spending bill but instead bring a stand-alone bill for aid to just Israel. They too are harming civilians. Israeli news site Haaretz reports that at least 11,500 children have been killed in the Israeli response to the October 7 attacks. "A child killed every 15 minutes, one out of every 100 children in Gaza.”

This weekend Russian President Putin called Gaza the largest child cemetery in the world.

Cancer Rates to Surge

The World Health Organization is warning that cancer rates will surge by 77% by 2050 in their new report. The primary factors they cite for this are tobacco and alcohol use as well as obesity and poor air quality.

The report shows that lung cancer is the most common type of cancer for men and breast cancer is the most common type of cancer for women. They have compiled this fancy website for you to graph any kind of cancer trend you’d like. A heat map shows the the U.S. and Europe have the world's most concentrated cancer rates. It also shows that five common cancers are responsible for 50% of cases.

Perhaps related and perhaps not, it sure seems like powerful organizations could do something about alcohol and they are choosing not to, right?

Farmers Revolt Across Europe

The farmer protests in Europe have taken root in Ireland and England over the weekend. Even though those farmers are no longer in the European Union, they are expressing solidarity with European farmers while protesting their own plights too.

In Greece, farmers dumped produce in the streets. In Ireland, farmers say that they are displaying solidarity with European farmers protesting over-regulation, bureaucracy and low incomes.

Last week, European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen met with farm lobby organizations after the summit, alongside Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. Von der Leyen said that they are “addressing short-term challenges” and “structural challenges faced by the sector in our Strategic Dialogue.”

What does that mean?

The media continues to paint the protests as “far right” but farmers reject that. A spokesperson for the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association said this to The Irish Times: ““Obviously, others might have a different approach but as far as we’re concerned, the problems of farming are complex and demand a technical knowledge and long-term commitment. Our problems are a matter between us and the Government and [European] Commission, they are not cudgels to be picked up and used by people who might have other, much wider agendas.”

Doctors Reject Canada's Murder Assistance Program

credit: x

Canada will put off medically induced death for people who are mentally ill until at least 2027. This is a follow-up to a story we reported last week. The MAID, or Medical Assistance in Dying, program was set to be extended to people with mental illness but now the government has extended that extension because doctors won't do it!

To be fair, Canada has a doctors shortage anyway but they also have a shortage of doctors that want to sign off on death for mentally ill people. Because who would want to sign off on someone’s voluntary death if that person’s death was not otherwise inevitable???

The Canadian government puts it this way: “This extension would provide more time for provinces and territories to prepare their health care systems, including the development of policies, standards, guidance and additional resources to assess and provide MAID in situations where a person's sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness. It would also provide practitioners with more time to participate in training and become familiar with available supports, guidelines and standards.”

So…let me get this straight. Professionals won’t do this because they clearly know it’s wrong. So the Canadian government wants to train them to do it? Based on standards they don’t have!?

4. That is how many times Taylor Swift has now won Album of the Year at the Grammys after winning the award on Sunday for “Midnights.”

$205,000. That is how much a town in Louisiana will pay in damages to a man that the police arrested without a warrant for a Facebook post about Covid lockdowns. The court ruled that his post was protect speech.

What's Trending?

Tucker Carlson is trending on news that he went to Russia to interview President Vladimir Putin. Neocon Bill Kristol suggested that perhaps he should not be let back into the U.S. That is ludicrous and transparent, don't you think? It is clear how scared they are when their war lies are threatened.

This video is trending in which a student is challenged for assuming that J.K. Rowling is transphobic. When a professor asks him to prove it, he sees how many assumptions he’s made based on popular opinion and then says he felt “like an idiot.”

The Grammy’s are trending because they happened on Sunday.

Molly McCann is trending for beating her opponent at the UFC Apex competition in Las Vegas.
