Lead: Wider War Coming to Middle East

damaged buildings in Beirut attack credit: afp

A Hamas leader was killed in a missile strike in Iran. Israel has not confirmed responsibility but Iran says that it holds Israel responsible and will strike back with ferocity.

Israel did take responsibility for a missile strike in Lebanon that killed a Hezbollah leader, Fuad Shukr. That strike hit a civilian area and civilian deaths have yet to be counted.

According to the BBC, "An Israeli official has confirmed to CBS News, the BBC's US partner, that Israel gave the US notice of its Beirut strike."

Why would the U.S. have authority to give Israel permission slips to bomb other countries?

These Hamas and Hezbollah leaders were undeniably anti-Zionist and wished harm on Israel. Their deaths abroad show that Israel is not very interested in a negotiated settlement with these groups. This zero-sum game puts the Middle East on the brink of a "wider war" as the Wall Street Journal calls it. Leaders in Qatar, Israel and Iran have all condemned the strikes but Israel still says that it is "conducting a situational assessment."

The DNC Goes All In On Kamala Harris

The Democratic National Committee said that Vice President Kamala Harris is the "only" candidate that qualified for the Democratic presidential ballot.

According to the DNC: "3,923 delegates from across the country petitioned to put Vice President Harris on the ballot for the Democratic nomination, and Vice President Harris secured the support of 99% of participating delegates."

The delegates did NOT cast their votes as a result of the primary voters. Those voters chose President Biden but Biden was ousted by a reported coup. The primary voters got no choice. It's Harris or Harris.

Reuters speculates that she could announce her running mate by August 5, which is "the deadline for delegates to return their ballot."

Harris appeared at a rally in Atlanta on Tuesday with Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion. Thousands of people attended and cheered on the twerk-ful event. It was certainly a renewed energy from anything President Biden attended and people seemed to like her Southern accent too! Reminder: She is from Oakland, California.

Rash of Murders in the U.K.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer was boo'd while attending a memorial for three young girls who killed by a knife attack at their dance class. At least five other young girls are in critical condition and three others were wounded by a 17 year-old boy that is currently in custody.

Here are some of the things that were shouted at the Prime Minister:

“How many more children? Our kids are dead and you’re leaving already?”

“Here’s your photo opportunity.”

“Get the truth out!”

"Go away, you’re not wanted.”

"He can't do shit, he's meant to be the Prime Minister."

Why were locals so upset by his visit? Because they feel that the attacker is being protected because he has yet to be named and because they feel that police are downplaying the fact that he was from immigrant parents. They also want to know if the boy was on a watch list but police won't say.

After the memorial, riots broke out in a local mosque and a police van was set on fire. Police say that the violence was caused by thugs who were capitalizing on the tragedy. At least 22 police were injured. The aftermath of these riots can be seen here.

Massachusetts Removes Biology From Birth Certificates

Massachusetts is ready to remove the words "mother" and "father" from birth certificates. Instead, the form will call the mother the "person who gave birth" and the father the "other parent."

This is from a bill just passed by the Senate called the "Act to ensure legal parentage equality." It passed the House in June so it will become law if Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey signs it.

The bill replaces all references to paternity on a birth certificate with the word parentage and ensures parental rights "without regard to the marital status, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation of their parents or the circumstances of their birth."

It also replaces the form item for a “child born out of wedlock” with the term "non-marital child." The form also allows for the birth certificate to name the surrogate parents and donors.

What's Trending?

Jonathan Owens is trending for being a supportive husband to his wife, gymnast Simone Biles. He was given time off from training camp for the Chicago Bears so that he could support watch her compete and has been photographed taking notes at her event and cheering her on. Some people were not thrilled that he put her medal on for a photo though.

Xero is trending because the accounting software suffered an outage that affected users in Australia, New Zealand and the U.K.

News By The Numbers

8. That is how many Olympic medals Simone Biles now has after the women's gymnastics team took home the gold, making her the most decorated U.S. Olympic gymnast in history. Five of those medals are gold medals.

14 seconds. That was how much Alex Yee was behind in the men's triathlon but he made it up with a sprint at the end to win gold.

25%. That is how much ratings for CBS Evening News have dropped in the last five years since Norah O'Donnell took the anchor chair. The network announced that she would be ousted from that spot after the 2024 Presidential election.
