The Squirrel Heard Round The World

The Internet exploded about a man who kept a pet squirrel and raccoon as pets in New York state after authorities raided his home, seized the animals and reportedly euthanized them.

The squirrel’s name was Peanut, or P’Nut, and the raccoon’s name was Fred. They had a sizable social media following, managed by his owner Mark Longo. According to the Associated Press, the New York “Department of Environmental Conservation took the animals Wednesday from Longo’s home and animal sanctuary in rural Pine City, near the Pennsylvania border. The agency said it had gotten complaints that wildlife was being kept illegally and potentially unsafely. State law requires people to get a license if they wish to own a wild animal. Longo has said he was working to get Peanut… certified as an educational animal.”

Authorities said that the animals were “euthanized so they could be tested for rabies after Peanut bit someone involved in the investigation.” These animals have become a campaign rally against the type of authoritarian government that is championed by the Democrats. Follow the hashtag #PeanutTheSquirrel but don’t forget about Fred, who was less popular but also lost his life.

The pet owners reportedly had an OnlyFans channel and they say that the government may have raided their home related to that activity.
