Russia gained more ground in the contested area of Ukraine. The Ukrainian army confirmed that it will retreat from the town of Ugledar in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).

The Ukrainian Khortitsa operational-strategic group said that it withdrew in order to regroup for future battles. Russian officials say that Ukraine withdrew after sustaining “heavy losses” due to their “refusal to withdraw its units from the city when it was possible.”

In any other week, this may have inspired the U.S. to renew its support of Ukraine but this week, the U.S. is focused on Israel and Zelensky’s trip to the U.S. last week failed to inspire the bloodlust he once did. The Wall Street Journal called his reception “tepid.” Meh.

Some NATO members are reportedly now signaling that they would like to speak with Russian President Putin. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been steadfast in supporting Ukraine’s military but may have recently warmed to the idea of diplomacy.
