Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky told the Vatican that he wants the war to end by the end of the year but the Vatican says that his peace plan is still insufficient.

The Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, said this about Zelensky’s so-called “plan”:

“It seems to me that we are still far away from the resolution [of the conflict]. We have President Zelensky’s peace proposal, which the Holy See supported immediately, particularly in the sphere of humanitarian issues. It represents an attempt to find peace, although it has gaps in the sense of not involving Russia. This plan can help, but it is not sufficient. I hope other formulae can be found to pave the way for the talks.”

This is because Zelensky’s plan would require Russia to withdraw from the Donbas regions and Crimea, all of which voted to join Russia because Ukraine had tortured and attacked those regions since 2014. That’s not a peace plan. That’s a fantasy and Russia continues to say as much.

Russia says that they are not going to participate in another peace summit without more concessions because “nobody trusts [Zelensky].” Nobody should.
