A U.S. soldier died in Gaza while constructing the pier that was destroyed within weeks. Why are U.S. soldiers dying for this war again?

CNN reports that Sgt. Quandarius Davon Stanley, 23, was one of three US service members hurt in May. He died last week from those injuries.

“Stanley was injured while supporting the mission that delivered humanitarian aid to Gaza in May 2024 and was receiving treatment in long-term care medical center,” Capt. Shkeila Milford-Glover, a spokesman for the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, said Monday.

Does the U.S. really care about aid to Gaza? On Monday, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller joked about it. When asked by the Associated Press why Israel has failed to meet requests for more aid, Miller joked that “it’s not the end of the semester” as if this war is on an academic year calendar so midterm grades don’t count. Would he feel this way if his family died during the midterm blitz?

Matt Lee, a reporter for the AP responded: “I suspect that the levity is a little bit inappropriate.” Especially in light of an American death in a conflict that we have not declared a war.
