NATO head Jens Stoltenberg had the nerve to describe what Ukraine is doing as a “big win” at the Davos World Economic Forum. He called it a win because he says that Russia wanted full control of all of Ukraine and since Ukraine “has survived as a sovereign independent nation,” that’s a win.
That’s also a lie.
Russia never declared that it wanted full control of Ukraine. Russia’s special military operation was based on a request from leaders in the Donbas who asked for protection from Ukraine’s constant attacks on the region since 2014. Ukraine has lost hundreds of thousands of lives trying to regain control of an area it has severely abused. And yet Stoltenberg said this:
“At some stage, Russia will understand that they’re paying a too high price and sit down and agree to some kind of just peace, but we need to stand by Ukraine. If we want that to happen, a peaceful just end to this war, the way to get there is more weapons to Ukraine.”
One would think that the high price paid by Ukraine would have already brought about that inflection point but Ukraine continues to oppose real peace negotiations with Russia.
No one in attendance at this panel pushed Stoltenberg on these lies.
Ukrainian commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said that his troops are on “active defense” now. That’s what they’re calling it. “Active defense” to “keep Russian forces on their toes.”
