The Pentagon has new rules for journalists that would give them the right to censor news.
Reporters are now being asked to sign agreements giving the Pentagon the power to authorize news reports and bar publication of unclassified information unless officials approve it. Refusing to sign means losing press credentials altogether.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said this about the new rules: “The ‘press’ does not run the Pentagon — the people do. The press is no longer allowed to roam the halls of a secure facility. Wear a badge and follow the rules — or go home.”
But in this case the badge is essentially a censorship contract that binds the press to the government’s content rules. The press should not be bound by the content rules of the government. Would Julian Assange abide by this? Absolutely not!
President Trump was asked about this on Sunday and said that he doesn’t agree with it.
