The Biden Administration wants to prioritize organ transplants to low income patients and racial minority patients. A new proposal from Health and Human Services would allow hospitals to charge more for DEI transplants.
While the proposal does not specifically allow for price surges for race, HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said that the law would remove racial bias in the transplant system.
Not only could hospitals get paid more from the Federal government for low-income transplants, it could be penalized if it does not do enough low income transplants. If a hospital does not meet a minimum low-income patient score, they’d have to pay $2,000 per transplant that they did for a regular-income person. Which means that making a decent living would put your life in jeopardy should you need an organ transplant.
