President Trump will make an address to the nation today about the war in Iran. I am pretty sure this is not an April Fool’s prank.
Given how the U.S. war was led by Israel, we can refer to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for what might be the U.S. messaging on the war. On Tuesday, Netanyahu said that Iran is no longer a threat to Israel. He said that “Iran is weaker than ever. Israel is stronger than ever” and that the Iranian regime will “eventually collapse.”
That is rhetoric.
Israel is now involved in a full-scale invasion of Lebanon, taking heavy fire from the Houthis and still being targeted in Tel Aviv by Iran. Only a fool would believe that this would leave a country stronger.
Iran confirms that President Trump’s envoys have reached out but continue to insist that they don’t take them seriously.
“We do not have any faith that negotiations with the US will yield any results. The trust level is at zero,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said. “We don’t see honesty.”
President Trump told reporters that the U.S. could “wrap up” the war within the next few weeks, with or without a deal from Iran. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the mission to prevent Iran from having a nuclear weapon has been successful. It’s all good now.
Again, rhetoric.
They can say whatever they want but it is clear that Iran has no intention of opening the Strait of Hormuz for Western allies. The U.S. can pack up and leave but the mess will remain. Don’t be fooled if tonight’s address is presented as a clean victory.
