U.S. delegates will meet in Oman on Friday to discuss a nuclear agreement with Iran. Heading into the talks, Washington has quietly moved the goalposts.
For months, the stated position of the Trump administration has been to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Now, Secretary of State Marco Rubio says Iran must also be barred from possessing ballistic missiles.
You see what’s happening.
This is no longer a nuclear nonproliferation discussion. It’s a disarmament demand and one that no sovereign nation in Iran’s position would ever accept. They have been attacked THREE times in the last year. Twice by Israel and once by the U.S. Why in the world would they ever give up all weapons?
A kindergartener can see what is going on here. When the conditions of success change mid-negotiation, you’re never going to win. Even if Iran were to concede on enrichment, inspections, or stockpiles, it wouldn’t satisfy the Trump administration or the Israeli government.
So we should expect this meeting to fail, mostly because the Western side is irrational.
