The CDC is now warning that a new COVID variant carries mutations that reduce the effectiveness of prior immunity, including from vaccines. This is exactly what many experts said early on: the virus would evolve, and vaccination alone would not stop its spread.
The variant is labeled BA.3.2 and represents a new lineage of SARS-CoV-2. It was first detected in South Africa in 2024, has spread to 23 countries, and has now been found in 25 U.S. states.
The CDC releases new data, and right on cue, the media launches into another round of fear-mongering. However, BA.3.2 is not even shown on the variant tracker list, and the CDC has this statement buried in their document: “Although genomic differences in BA.3.2 and its geographic spread warrant continued monitoring, the impact of these findings on human health outcomes (e.g., illness severity and health care system impact) remains to be determined.”
This indicates the CDC does not have sufficient evidence to draw firm conclusions, yet the media narratives continue to promote fear that leads to ridiculous statements like this: “COVID is not a seasonal virus; we need updated vaccines in August, in time for school to start.”
