Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan said on Tuesday that the country would host talks between the United States and Iran. Vice President JD Vance is reportedly heading to Pakistan to participate in those talks since Iran has refused to negotiate with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Who could blame them? Each time Witkoff and Kushner have attended peace negotiations, Iran gets bombed by the U.S. Neither of them are elected officials so they answer to nobody. Perhaps Iran figures that JD Vance has presidential hopes and something to lose if this war continues.
The talks with President Vance could be a set up for further escalation but Iran has repeatedly said that it puts little to no faith in American guarantees so Vice President Vance will really have to work some magic if there is any hope of ending this war.
Still, many insiders report that the U.S. could launch a ground invasion as early as this Friday. That might be tricky given that New York Times reports that Iran has all but destroyed the 13 military bases in the region used by American troops, calling them “all but uninhabitable.”
While the U.S. and Israel become increasingly desperate, Israel is moving fast on its expansive plans of ethnically cleansing Palestinians.
The Israeli Knesset’s National Security Committee approved a bill this week that will impose the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners. This means executions by hanging.
This is terrifying. Israel has over 14,000 Palestinian prisoners right now, held without charge or trial. This law would allow them to kill them at will. Remember, they had at least 4,000 October 7 Hostages, but the media won’t use that word.
Palestinians are already enduring extreme suffering. According to a report from B’Tselem, an Israeli human rights group, Israeli prisons currently function as a network of torture camps. Yet now, legislation threatens to escalate that harm even further by passing a bill that can easily end their lives.
Additionally, The Guardian finds that Israel has not prosecuted the killing of a Palestinian in the West Bank since 2020, despite hundreds of adults and children alike being killed by Israeli settlers in that time frame.
It seems this war has only made the plight of Palestinians worse as attention is diverted to Iran.
