President Trump signed the Memorandum of Understanding with Iran, which is the framework for a peace agreement. Iranian officials have also signed.
The 14-point agreement was confirmed by U.S. officials. The most important conditions are as follows:
The U.S. and Iran will end military operations against one another and make sure that their allies (Israel) will terminate all military operations in Lebanon;
The Strait of Hormuz will reopen and the U.S. will remove its naval blockade;
The U.S. will end all sanctions on Iran and help the country recover at least $300 billion “for the reconstruction and economic development of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
Iran affirms that it will “not procure or develop nuclear weapons” but the deal does leave open the possibility that Iran enriches uranium for nuclear power. The Trump administration admitted that this is only fair, which was initially the the Trump administration’s position until it wasn’t.
U.S. officials are spinning this as a “win.” It is hard to see it that way.
The U.S. murdered young girls in Iran to start a war in order to find themselves exactly where they started before those murders. Iran has been cooperating with nuclear inspections for decades. They will continue doing that. We can keep muttering “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon” like a crazy person on a street corner.
The U.S. now ensures that Iran will become wealthier through reconstruction and sanctions relief. None of those things should have been necessary in the first place.
The plan also reopens the Strait of Hormuz which was open before the war, only now Iran has the opportunity to charge tolls once the 60-day term is up.
Despite the inevitable “what was it all for” depression, you can’t fault President Trump for agreeing to this deal. It ended months of global pain that was only going to get worse. It took hubris to start this war but we should be thankful that he ended it when he did.
If in fact this is the end. The outcome cannot be guaranteed if Israel refuses to stop its invasion of Lebanon and Israel has made it clear that it will not withdraw from Lebanon. What will the U.S. and Iran do when Condition Number 1 of the agreement is not adhered to?
It is worth noting that Zionists are furious about this deal. For them, anything short of a full-blown war with Iran is a loss. They are hoping that President Trump returns to “drop more bombs on them.”
